Gold (Competitive)/Silver(Recreational) Concept?

We sent out an email explaining our effort to try the Gold (competitive)/Silver(Recreational) concept this year.  We discussed this at our annual meeting (50 attendees), and it was overwhelmingly approved.  We have received 3 complaints about this structure so far, so wanted to extend everyone the chance to weigh in with their opinion.

Please go to the home page of the website, and under BYS Info, select Survey.  Here is the link as well:  https://leagueathletics.com/Survey/Default.asp?id=4387&n=&org=BLUFFTONYOUTHSPORTS.COM

This survey will be open until Tuesday 1/24, so please vote for your opinion before then.

Thanks,

Pre-Evaluation Clinic 2/4

BYS will again be holding a 2 hour clinic for kids ages 7-12 (Machine Pitch, Minors, Ozone, and Softball) on Saturday February 4th.  Depending on the number of kids that sign up, we will probably have a morning and afternoon session.  Cost will be $10/kid, with all the proceeds going toward equipment needs for the 2017 season.

The focus of this clinic will be to get the kids prepared for Evaluations (throwing, hitting, catching, and speed).  Working on the fundamentals to dust off any winter blues!!!

To register for this clinic, please go to the registration page on the website to sign your child up.

Thanks,

What is Gold versus Silver League?

This year the plan is to try something new which is very similar to other “Gold/Silver” concepts in other sports (discussed and approved at this year's BYS Annual Meeting).  This concept would only pertain to anyone playing baseball in the Machine Pitch (7-8 ages), Minors (9-10 ages), or Ozone (11-12) divisions.  There are several reasons for this change, but the two main reasons are as follows:

  1. Our biggest complaint to the board on an annual basis is “My kid does not play enough, or only plays in right field.”  The Silver league will allow for an environment where kids from all levels will have a chance to play positions that historically have only been for the kids with advanced skill level without the safety concern of getting hurt while learning it.
  2. Travel Ball is getting bigger and bigger, and becoming more and more costly in the process.  We want to provide a competitive environment for those players looking for a higher level of play that not only keeps them playing with their friends locally, but helps cut down on the cost of travel.

The Gold Division would be for players that would like to play in a very competitive environment and play by advanced All Star rules.  Teams will play other Gold teams in our organization, but will also play against Beaufort Gold teams as well.  The plan is to play one game during the weeknights (probably Wednesdays) either in Bluffton or Beaufort, and also play 3-4 Double Headers on Saturdays during the season.  There will be an end of the season tournament for these teams as well.

The Silver Division would be for players that prefer a more recreational environment where players play by Recreation rules (similar to our normal regular season rules), and get the ability to learn different positions in a game that focuses more on enjoying the game and does not have the pressure that some kids do not like.  This division will only play other teams in the Silver division.  They will have a regular season, and a playoff at the end of the year just like we have done in the past.

As it relates to All-Stars, we expect that a majority of our All Stars will be selected from the Gold Division, but the All-Star Coaches will have the opportunity to select players from the Silver environment if they feel a child is deserving and can help the team advance.

Please indicate in Registration if you have a preference, but know that participation in the Gold Division will ultimately be decided based on Evaluations.  Safety is our #1 concern here, as we want all kids to be able to succeed in the right environment for them.

While we would love to offer this option in the softball world, we just do not have enough teams involved in our program right now to make this happen.  There also are limited chances for play outside of our league as well.  We hope that changes in the future though.

Should you have any questions about this, please email me at .

Looking forward to a great Spring Season,

Alan Arseneau
